
Huw David is a senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Plymouth, Devon. He consults privately at the Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital. His NHS practice is based at Derriford Hospital (also in Plymouth), which is one of the largest hospitals in the UK. Huw also undertakes regular orthopaedic outreach clinics in Kingsbridge, Launceston and Newton Abbot. Patients are drawn from across Devon, Cornwall and occasionally, beyond.
As the senior surgeon in a department of 20 consultants Huw is always available to offer his advice and support to his junior colleagues. Huw has vast experience in a variety of elbow, knee and shoulder treatments, further information on which can be found in detail on this website.
Huw qualified from St George’s Hospital, London in 1982. His surgical training was undertaken in Bristol, London and Cardiff. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1987 and was one of the first trainees to gain the specialist fellowship in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (1993). He was awarded prestigious fellowships with Prof. Christian Gerber, Switzerland and with Dr. Michael Sandow, Australia. He was appointed Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery in 1994.
Huw developed the upper limb service in Plymouth and is now supported in this field by five colleagues. He has vast experience in all aspects of orthopaedic and trauma surgery and remains active in both teaching and research. He developed the orthopaedic component of the Basic Surgical Skills course and has been a faculty member of the national AO fracture management courses and has taught on arthroscopic (keyhole) courses both locally and nationally including at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London. He is an Honorary University Fellow and Academic Tutor at the Peninsular Medical School. He is a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Derriford Hospital and the Medical Advisory Committee at the Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital.
Huw is married with four children, two cats and a dog. Outside of work he follows many team sports and enjoys skiing, cycling and golf. Huw is a keen singer and has been a member of several choirs in Devon having sung in venues that includes Exeter Cathedral, Buckfast Abbey and the Great Hall, Dartington.
